Dominique is born, my sourdough starter

“Until the introduction of commercial yeast about 200 years ago, people had baked with sourdough for thousands of years. Am I ready to have this baby?

So.

I’m getting a day older, time has flown by and I have been mentally preparing for this big step in my life for months. I’ve been looking forward to this, but have also been putting it off, due to busy lifestyle, travels, work and being nervous for such a serious responsibility.

I’m attempting to live more conscious and healthy in any way and feel like such a different person when I read back old posts on this blog (okay, I did grow up a bit).

So.

Maybe it’s time.

I’m a big fan of The Zero Waste Chef . She’s a huge inspiration. I’d like to do a lot of things her way; from zero waste, to recycling, to shopping, to cooking, to fermenting and to having a sourdough baby. She already got me to carrying my breakfast and lunch in mason jars and she thought me it’s possible to freeze food in (glas) mason jars too (I only broke the first one, but with being more conscious and healthy comes patience, which I’m practicing since breaking that first jar)! I haven’t managed to get rid of all the old Tupperware yet, as I will not throw them, but I am slowly eliminating them in the household. Oh and did you know best way to peel ginger is with a spoon? 

I’ve been doing fine in taking care of my cat https://dlcsmanagement.wordpress.com/2012/04/11/my-1st-buzzbox/ for the last 9 years, but I feel like that’s different. The cat wakes me up for food EVERY morning. She cries when she feels sick. She tells me if her toilet is not clean enough, or if there are hairs stuck in her throat. A sourdough baby has to be taken care of a few times a day as well and keeps quiet. It has to be fed, stirred, taken care of and loved.

 

 

I think I might be ready to have this baby, but am very excited. Will I manage?

Naturally painted Easter eggs

It’s fun and easy to use foods and flowers to make your own natural Easter egg dyes. The two main ways to use your own dyes are to add dyes to the eggs when boiling them or to dye the eggs after they have been hard-boiled. It’s a lot faster to boil the dyes and eggs together, but you will use several pans if you want to make multiple colors. Dyeing the eggs after they have been cooked takes as many dishes and more time, but may be more practical (after all, most stoves only have four burners!).

Try both fresh and frozen produce. Canned produce will produce much paler colors. Boiling the colors with vinegar will result in deeper colors. Some materials need to be boiled to impart their color (name followed by ‘boiled’ in the table). Some of the fruits, vegetables, and spices can be used cold. To use a cold material, cover the boiled eggs with water, add dyeing materials, a teaspoon or less of vinegar, and let the eggs remain in the refrigerator until the desired color is achieved. In most cases, the longer you leave Easter eggs in the dye, the more deeply colored they will become.

Here is the preferred method for using natural dyes:

  1. Place the eggs in a single layer in a pan. Add water until the eggs are covered.
  2. Add approximately one teaspoon of vinegar.
  3. Add the natural dye. Use more dye material for more eggs or for a more intense color.
  4. Bring water to a boil.
  5. Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
  6. If you are pleased with the color, remove the eggs from the liquid.
  7. If you want more intensely colored eggs, temporarily remove the eggs from the liquid. Strain the dye through a coffee filter (unless you want speckled eggs). Cover the eggs with the filtered dye and let them remain in the refrigerator overnight.
  8. Naturally-colored eggs will not be glossy, but if you want a shiny appearance you can rub a bit of cooking oil onto the eggs once they are dry.

You can use fresh and frozen berries as ‘paints’, too. Simply crush the berries against dry boiled eggs. Try coloring on the eggs with crayons or wax pencils before boiling and dyeing them. Happy Easter!

Golden Brown Dill Seeds

Natural flu shot

I still didn’t *KNOCKS ON WOOD get the flu this year.
Everyone seems to have already gotten it here in The Netherlands.
Wonder how I’ve been battling it?

*Peel and grate some ginger, put in a teapot or cup
*Crush a chilli pepper and add to the pot or cup
*Add boiled water, cover with a lid or plate or tin foil
*After 5 minutes, add half a lemon, squeezed
*Add a spoon or 2 of honey
*Drink hot; a cup (or 2) in the morning and a cup (or 2) before going asleep.
This tea is also supertasty when drunk cold.
